Family of boy, 6, killed in hit and run urge driver to come forward

The family of 6-year-old Owen Wight asks the driver who fatally hit the boy and drove off to step forward.
Owen was left for dead by the driver after he was hit last Saturday, less than half a mile away from his home in Wakefield. Owen’s father, 33-year-old Neil Wight, recalled the terrible moment he found his son. “I got there and I went over to Owen and I was holding him and talking to him.
“I was holding his hand and saying 'Owen, if you can hear me, please don’t leave us. I love you so much, you’re my little soldier.’ But when I looked at his face I knew really that he was gone. I knew from that blank look that we had lost him."
Mrs Wightman said: “We would like to say to whoever has done this, please come forward because he has left two brothers behind.” Owen’s family hopes the driver comes forward so they can have some closure.

It’s terrible to hit somebody and just drive off! It might have been an accident, but don’t be a coward and drive off. Face the fact you made a mistake. A horrible mistake, but it’s a mistake. Those things can happen. If it really was an accident, there’s not going to be a trial or a punishment. I can’t wrap my mind around the fact that the driver just drove off.
I understand that Owen’s family wants to know who did it, because knowing the facts is the first step to recovery. It’s part of the mourning process. I really hope the driver comes forward so especially Owen’s brothers can give a face to the monster that killed their little sibling.
